Welcome to my new blog, I am sorry that you’ve probably already read an incredible number of reviews of My Morning Jacket’s new album Evil Urges, yet I have decided that it is only natural to review the work of one of my favorite groups and to give you an idea of my personal taste. Overall, I am somewhat impressed by the album, yet I would wholeheartedly state that it leaves me desiring more. The album opens with a bouncy sound reminiscent of “Wordless Chorus” with similar percussion and sound as from their previous album “Z,” yet the keyboard work has drastically improved and the overall ambience is the part that impresses me most. The most significant change that the band has made is their increase in the usage of synthesizers and glitchier percussion tracks. The Louisville alt-country aspect that My Morning Jacket originated from is still evidenced through songs such as “I’m Amazed” and “Librarian.” The band keeps enough of these origins to keep the long-time listener satisfied, yet I believe that their most experimental songs are the ones by which to judge this album. “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream (Part II)” is very ambient and mysterious and stands as one of the stronger tracks while also representing a new direction for the band. I think that the most adventuresome of the new tracks is “Highly Suspicious,” yet i think it also stands as the album’s biggest failure. Maybe “Highly Suspicious” will warm up to my ears, yet at this point in time only one thought remains: it is highly suspicious that this song made the album. Make sure to check out Jim James and the rest of My Morning Jacket this September 3rd at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. The band blew my mind at the 9:30 Club two years ago and I am sure whatever your take is on this new material they are sure to impress you live.
