I recently saw this and thought that this is one of the more amazing music as a physical art concepts that I have heard of. David Byrne is a genius and if you did not believe it from The Talking Heads, his solo work, or his Luaka Bop world music collections you should believe it now. He has taken a building in NYC and rigged up different pipes and columns of the building to an old pipe organ. The keys of the organ trigger mechanical solenoids or releases of compressed air that allow the pipes of the building to be played like a flute or for surfaces to be hammered on to create an array of sounds. If you happen to be in the NYC area on a weekend between now and August 24 make sure to stop by the Battery Maritime Building in the afternoon to take your turn at playing a building as a musical instrument.
David Byrne – Playing the Building
