The first full length album from Jacksonville, FL’s Black Kids is released this week in the United States. I like this album, yet the only question is how much… I loved the Black Kids’ Wizard of Ahhhs EP from last year and regarded it as one of my favorite works of 2007. I would say my enthusiasm for the Partie Traumatic LP might have reached too high of a level due to such a great ep. The main gripe that I have with this new album is that every song from the ep made the lp, which signals to me that maybe not enough quality material was produced that matched or surpassed what was already on the ep. Maybe not enough new material was created during the sessions and they felt that they had to rush this to market, but I really think the strength of the new songs signals that more time should have gone into the preparation of this work. I really guess i expected improvements not only in sound but in material over the ep to be made and although each of the songs sounds better in its re-recorded state I still wish the album was comprised of a greater percentage of new material. After all, the new track “Look At Me” contains an almost Tom Tom Club “Wordy Rappinghood” kind of thing going on. Another new track, “I’m Making Eyes At You” is an incredible quasi-sensual spaced out track that really excites me at the bands new directions.  If you don’t know much about the Black Kids, I saw them at Sonar in Baltimore earlier this year and they are a young group with relatively solid stage presence and a great sound. They have fun when they play and their personality is infectious. I really see them coming into their own in the near future, but I just don’t think this album is the kind of seminal work we all had hoped that it would be. I would definitely grab a copy for my collection but I know my high expectations weren’t truly met here I’m left wanting a little more, or at least to see them again soon… They’ll be coming to the Black Cat on September 26th…
